Kit kat upgrade to lollipop is an overhaul of all u knew on android. Lollipop to marshmallow can be talk of as android lollipop v5.5. Just a little adjustment and addition.

If you root it, you won't get OTA update but will manually need to flash 6.0 OS on your device.

are you sure these are all the xiaomi phones getting marshmallow? what of the mi 4c? it's newer than the mi 4 so i don't see why xiaomi won't roll out an update for it.
